That glowing creature in the photo below is a lousy digital picture of my daughter modeling the jeans she made this year in Fashion Design.
We recently attended a fashion show put on by the Fashion Design class at her high school. All of the girls modeled some of the outfits they had made throughout the year. It was an excellent show with lighting, music and commentary and was very well attended by not only parents and siblings but by their peers.
In my day Fashion Design was referred to as Home Ec and it was So. Not. Cool. to take sewing in high school. I find it such a positive thing to see how the times have changed and it is now very cool to take Home Ec (politically correct) Fashion Design. I don't remember exactly when I started sewing but I know I was younger than third grade. I don't think I did any sewing at all in high school, and even if I had I wouldn't a) have worn it, or b) have talked about it with anyone. What a waste!
I give huge amounts of credit to my daughter's sewing teacher! No matter what project a girl wanted to undertake she never told them it was not possible. She encouraged their creativity and provided positive support throughout. Most of the girls in my daughter's class have made their prom dress this year and the majority of them are first-timers!
I also credit the pattern companies for adding patterns that appeal to the younger crowd such as the Built by Wendy series and plenty of great fabric designs as well.
It's all a good thing.
She made jeans??? That's awesome! She looks very cute.
